As a form to give back to students and increase awareness and engagement toward seed saving, sustainability, food justice, food production, composting, etc… PICA has begun collaborating with Demeter Seed Library to bring together quarterly raffles!
For our second raffle we decided that we wanted to do a composting raffle to increase students and community members' involvement in composting from their homes! Through careful planning and discussion, PICA planned to have three options for our raffle which included the following:
A tumbler composting system
A vermicomposting system
A scraps collection bucket for your kitchen and some worms for your compost
Here is an image of the DSL and PICA leadership team during our zoom meeting :-) While we did not particularly plan with DSL for our composting raffle, we discussed and updated each other with our individual raffles we planned for the quarter :)
As mentioned, our focus of this raffle was compost. To initially get a sense of individuals composting needs we posted a composting inquiry on our instagram asking the following questions:
What is your experience with composting? (it can be anywhere between “I don’t know anything about compost” and “I am a compost connoisseur!”)
What city/state/country are you located?
What compost related items would you like to see raffled off?
Our flyer for this inquiry can also be seen below:

To enter our composting raffle we had 3 requirements:

Compost is about taking something old and turning it into something new. What is a time in your life you did something of this sort?
We were excited to have over 25 comments for the following question: Compost is about taking something old and turning it into something new. What is a time in your life you did something of this sort? Some of our comments included:
Turning old socks into leg warmers and 2000s emo fingerless gloves. Taking old glass jars from food I bought and making them into containers for food or art supplies. Buying the neglected thrift finds like fundraising or school spirit themed shirts and up-cycling them with fabric paints to make my clothes more unique! @ravencalamari
i really like save all of my food scraps to either create a super hearty salad for my guinea pigs or to make a vegetable broth for some soup! @maddie.jpg
Ice cube trays have become seed starters for the garden :-) @kayli_e
Cutting up old clothes for rags for printmaking; cleaning pasta sauce jars and peanut butter jars to use for bulk food items @kayla_martain_
